So when I received my material in the mail, I noticed my bib number was 628. Now for Elite Racing's events the first number on your bib corresponds to your corral. So the slower people (like me) have a 12000 number the super fast guys 1000's and the elite athletes have single or double digit numbers. I know I dont belong in the first corral so I was a little confused about my number. When I went to pick up my number I also noticed that everyone had white bibs while mine was yellow. Now I was really confused. So I walk over to the first worker I see and ask her why my bib is yellow. So then she got all excited and says "It's cause you're a rockstar, you rock!". O....K....didnt expect that at all but apparently they make a real big deal out of their rockstars.

Everywhere I went it was oh look rockstar. It was funny. The best part was when it happened at the finish line. Never had the announcer call out my name and have the entire crowd cheer for me as I finshed. That was pretty cool, I have to get that on DVD!

The race was good, weather was nice. I didnt really push myself. I had a bit of a stomach ache the night before. I was okay but I said let me just enjoy this one since my Rockstar Tour is over. I met up with the Austins from Nashville. I have seen them at so many events and ended up befriending them. They're a cool couple. So now I have them all! My collection is complete with the 26.2 Music Miles and the Rock Star! Only thing is now there's this Desert Star Medal, plus Elite added the Rock & Roll San Antonio Marathon & Half Marathon. Which means...medal revamps. Oh no I'm going to have to do this all over again! I wont be doing San Antonio since it looks like it'll fall around the same time as NYC, and NYC was one of my first goals. So my 2007 Rock Star Tour is over...but it looks like I'll be back for 2009.

Miles Ran: 13.1 Miles
Feeling Afterwards: Excited
Results: 3:05:54 (14:11 per mile)
Next Goal: NYC Marathon

Philadelphia Distance Run (13.1)

I didn't mention this last time but I got this REALLY bad blister in Virginia Beach. I was hoping it would go away but 2 weeks is not enough time. Philly was a good event. They had all the Rocky Music at the start line to get everyone pumped. The race started in front of the art museum and ended there as well. The art museum is the one with the famous steps Rocky runs in the movie. I kept saying after I cross the finish line I would run up the steps with my medal on.

The race went pretty well. The course is FLAT. There was not a single hill the entire time. This course is known for people having their PR (Personal Record) since its an easy course. I missed mine by 8 minutes cause of my foot but I'm not upset. By the time I got to the finish line my foot was hurting so I said forget the steps. Ill have to go back to really get a PR and do the steps.

I stayed in Philly for a week, and it was great. Philly is alot like NY so I felt right at home. Although I ran my 13.1 I pretty much undid any health benefit that came from it with all the Philly Cheesesteaks I had that week. I also went to the Ben Franklyn Meuseum to see the King Tut Exhibit. They have some nerve...his mummy wasnt even there!

I got 3 more medals. My finisher's medal, the Beach to The Bell, and the Dynamic Duet...but I'll be back! I have a PR to set as well as this record for eating 14 cheesesteaks in an hour that I want to break LOL!

Miles Ran: 13.1 Miles
Feeling Afterwards: Tired...want bed now!
Results: 2:54:58 (13:21 per mile)
Next Goal: San Jose

Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon: Virginia Beach (13.1)

I slacked off for this one and boy did I pay for it. It's been almost 2 months since I ran. It started out cause the weather was hot, then after a couple of weeks procrastination kicked in and before you know it I missed all that time and my race was coming up.

I was able to run the first mile but after that I was getting tired and jogged/walked the rest. It was pretty sad seeing the guy in the sponge bob suit pass me, thats what I get for slacking. I was staying about 2 blocks away from the beach which was pretty cool, and there's a 7-Eleven on every block. I really wished I couldve stayed longer.

As far as the race, I did bad time wise. Ill have to make it up at Philly & San Jose. I finshed though so I got my medals. Aside from the finisher's medal I earned the I Rocked 39.3, as well as the Grand Slam. I'm not with my father and apparently neither are my niece & nephew since their father's too much of a bum to spend time with them. ANYWAY...I bring the kids out to run since they love the races. My grandfather passed away from complications due to both Lung & Prostate Cancer so I ran this race in his honor.

I was aiming for under an hour and I missed it by 28 secs! Wasn't too hard on myself though cause I still did good and ran one of my fastest runs. Afterwards it was time for the kids race! The kids had a lot of fun, you can tell by the pictures. Afterwards we took some pics and since the kids were in the park, they played while I rested a little. One of the news anchors came over to interview me after the race since he saw me pushing 2 kids on swings and it was obvious we all ran the races. They were kind of surprised though when I mentioned I was the uncle and had no idea where or what their father was doing. I got two marathons done in under 6 weeks. I didnt do as well as I wanted but I still had my best time. I was aiming for 6 hrs or less.

So, once again I took all the precautions to make sure I didnt mess up my run. No injuries, ate the right foods, slept...and of course used the bathroom before the race! I held back instead of going at my normal pace, which is the reason why I did so well. It was also very humid at the start, and the sun was beaming on us by the time I was at the half way point. The course was also slanted, which I found bizarre. I also learned the next day that Sport Sunblock which is "water/sweat proof" doesnt do any justice. I have a nasty burn on my shoulders where I kept pouring water to cool myself down. Anyway despite all that I still did well. I'll post up pics when I get them all.

I also got myself some extra medals. The received the Silver Note the week before the race. I got this for doing PF Chang Arizona + Country Music Nashville. I should recieve 2 more medals. The Golden Note (for Nashville + San Diego) and the Triple Crown (for doing 3 events).

Thanks again to everyone who helped me fundraise for these events. I still have to post images. I also got my Silver note medal for running 2 music marathons (Arizona Rock & Roll + Nashville Country Music) so I'll post that up.

This weekend is marathon #4. I started looking back at what I've done in my past year of running. I didnt even realize I had raised as much as I did. I wanted to try and raise $22,000 in 2007. I've raised $7800 this year so far, almost halfway to the amount I wanted to raise. I then looked at the amount I raised last year and I realized I raised $10,070 in one year which is still a good amount. I also thought about the fact that at the time (a little over a year ago), I was about to run my first marathon and had a little doubt in my mind as to if I could do this or not. Well actually, there's been a point at each one of my marathons where I wondered if I could do this or not. In NJ, it was during the start of the race. This was my first time so I was a little nervous. The race was also two 13.1 mile loops so after the first loop, as I watched the half marathoners finish I thought "Shit I have to do this again". In AZ it was an hour before I had to leave to the race. I got no sleep, ate something that messed up my stomach and spent the night tossing & turning if not in the bathroom. In TN it was at the point where the courses split. I made the mistake of not going to the bathroom before the race and had to make a stop at the first bathroom stop which was a 20 minute line. Due to the fact that I was so far behind I was surrounded by 1/2 Marathoners. When the fork in the road (marathoners left, 1/2 marathoners right) appeared I was one of 2 people I saw taking the left route. While the marathoners were on their way to finish I was nearing my halfway point.

At each one of these points I thought about everyone who I would let down if I didn't complete my run. First there's the people I was raising the money for. I knew for a fact that the money I raised was going to make a difference so by not completing it. I was letting down the patients & family members who were thankful of what I had done. Then there's the people who donated. I was letting them down as well. They believed in me, and were donating because of this great thing I was doing. I was also letting my coaches down who believed in me and knew I could do it. Lastly I was letting myself down because this was something I really wanted to do. I couldnt let anyone down so I just sucked it up and finished what a started.

There's something about these runs, that brings out an inner drive. I've been in situations where I'm in physical pain, I'm sick, or exhausted...and rather than take the easy way out, I just did it. Whatever it is...its something we all need to find and tap into. We're letting ourselves (as well as others down) when we dont do our best to accomplish these big goals we have for ourselves. So thats what I'm going to do from now on. Anytime I have feelings of doubt or laziness setting in, I'll think about everyone Im letting down, and that should motivate me to not give up and keep on. Just my 2 cents.

Anyway thanks to everyone who has helped with my fundraising, thanks to everyone who cheered me on, thanks to everyone who believed in me.

Country Music Marathon (26.2M)

What a day, What a day.

So no injury like in NJ, and I made sure I didnt eat anything I was supposed to like in Phoenix. This time I would finally have a good marathon run....WRONG!!!!

I made sure I got myself a new camel pack so I would have no hydration issues, went to bed early, ate the right foods, got plenty of sun block so I wouldn't burn, had the right socks & shoes so everything was good. I bumped into my coaches who didn't expect to see me at Nashville. They didn't know I was running this event and think I'm crazy for doing this and San Diego in 5 weeks. So I ate on time, drank enough fluids, took some pain killers...I was set to go.

About 20,000 all on line ready to go. It took about 40 minutes to get from my starting spot to the actual start line, thats how long it was. So I'm running and then realized...I didnt use the bathroom. I see the first bathroom stop about half a mile into the race. Only one port a potty and a VERY long line. So there go 20 minutes (yes 20 minute wait), I really had to go. Now for those who don't know we drink lots of water before the race and are supposed to go to the bathroom BEFORE the race not once...but several times so that this doesn't happen. You get on the long bathroom line, use the bathroom, and then get back on the line since you will have to go again (of course I didn't). So after losing 40 minutes just to get to the start + 20 minutes at the first bathroom (1 hr now) I go back to running. Just my luck the second set of bathrooms had no line. Anyhow about 15 minutes later...I have to go again! This time it was only about 5 or 10 minutes but still thats way too much on just bathroom and I already lost 1 hr!

SO that was the biggest issue for me with this race. One other issue was from training. As you can see in my other pictures, the majority of my training has been during the winter time so I'm not used to running in 85 degree weather. Morning time wasn't as bad but around high noon...the sun was slowing me down. Thus I ended up slowing down to walking pace a lot earlier than usual. SO 7 hours later...I was done. I shouldve been done in about 6hrs, maybe I can finally do that in San Diego.

Afterwards I we went to The Horseback Saloon...Nashville loves live music. BBQ & Live Music all over downtown Nashville. Saw some line dancing which I realized is just the electric slide to different music. We were supposed to go bullriding but I was too tired and in pain. Off to the hotel and into bed.

So here are some pics...including the finishing picture which I messed up by cracking jokes on the person running next to me. Next time...I have to remember...the camera!

Miles Ran (and walked): 26.2 Miles
Feeling Afterwards: Sore and tired, but hey I made the first party!
Results: 7:01:41 (16:05 per mile)
Next Goal: San Diego in 5 weeks apart

Brooklyn Half Marathon

So this race meant a lot more to me than any other race I have ever ran. When I started running I had just recently finished physical therapy for my ankle injury. I had tore a tendon in my ankle playing baseball. It was the same exact injury as Cut Shilling from the Boston Red Sox (torn perenial tendon). About a year ago, I ran my first ever New York Road Runners (NYRR) Race, first since the injury and it just so happened to be the Brooklyn 1/2. Well it went BAD! I got there late so I started late. As the train door opened letting us off in BK, the train literally emptied out as we heard the starting horn and everyone was trying to hurry to drop off their bags and start the race. Of course I did the same and as I finally got everything done and on to the starting line I was already WAY behind. There is a turn around point in the race when you are nearing the 3 mile mark. THe large crowd was at that point and I hadnt even gotten to the 1 mile mark! To make matters worst everytime I would pass a mile marker, the would take it down and reopen traffic to the public. So of course I did the stupid thing and tried to catch up to the crowd. HUGE MISTAKE. I ended up putting too much pressure on my ankle and reinjuring myself. At that point everyone thought I wouldnt compete in the NJ Marathon but thanks to my Coach Ramon, I was able to do it anyway.

So fast forward a year later. Back to BK, to the one event that kicked my ass. Although I have already ran 2 marathons and several 1/2 marathons...the BK 1/2 still intimidated me. I still have memories of the messed up race I had. So right before leaving (at 5:30AM) I watched this. There's sound to that site so you get a better experience with the sound.

I wasnt feeling too well right before the race. I dont know if it was the food from the day before or me being a little nervous. The first 3 miles running on the boardwalk are a pain in the ass. Loose nails, and at some points when you would step on the board, the other side would come up. SO I saw 4 people fall during the beginning. Not a cool thing to see for a race that I was already nervous about. When I was happy to be done with the boardwalk and to my surprise when I got to the 5 mile mark, they screamed out 12:33 (pace) which is pretty fast for me. I tried my best to keep the pace. I finally crossed the finish line and I could hardly speak when I was done. It was a combination of me being tired as well as the excitement of finally getting this event off my mind! Not only that, but my time was great! Pics when I get them!

Miles Ran: 13.1 Miles
Feeling Afterwards: Extremely Tired, but happy and relieved
Results: 2:46:08 (12:40 Pace)
Races Needed To Qualify For NYC Marathon 2008: 2

Open Bar Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone who attended the open bar fundraiser Friday April 6th 2007. I only ran 5 miles instead of 10. My ankle was acting up and I didn't take pain killers before running. I wont forget them before my next run. I took it easy cause I do have The Scotland Run (10k...6.2M) tomorrow and it is one of the qualifying races for the 2008 NYC Marathon.

After practice we went to this event called "Connection to the Cause". It was basically ab informative meeting for us to see exactly where the money we raise goes to. There were supposed to be a couple more leukemia patients there, but they didn't show and I'm not sure the reason why. One of the survivors specifically went into detail about her story. 11 years ago she went to the doctor for swollen lymph nodes thinking it was a cold and found out she had leukemia. She spoke about her chemo, how at one point she was unable to walk because she was so weak, and some of the new treatments that saved her life. When she was weak and didn't want the treatment anymore, she continued her fight. She thanked us for waking up early on Saturday mornings to run because she was alive today due to the money we had raised. She plans on one day running a marathon with us when she's completely cured and able to do so.

I grabbed information packets from the Leukemia & Lymphoma society. They provide tons of services, support groups, and even financial aid. Im not sure if all this information is available to the patients over in our department. I'll ask around and see if we can put some of these pamplets out. Anyhow..Scotland Run tomorrow...

Miles Ran: 5 Miles

NYRR 8000 (8K)

So...this was supposed to be Saturday's race (3/17/07). I was feeling VERY tired when I got there so I was kind of wishing I signed up for the 4 miles instead of 15K (9.3 miles). I'm not one to cop pleas and take the easy road so I just sucked it up and ran the 15K.

Started out the first mile ok...second mile was ok...and then cramps started setting in, breathing was off and I slowed down. I didn't even realize the breathing was off till another runner pointed out what I was doing. Didnt get her name...so thanks to the lady who pointed out my breathing was off!

Something is up with the NYRR results, they're off so. I have some finish line pics. Kid's Run!!

So this was a quick one, and it was fun. Definitely one of the best races I've ran. Why?

1- It was in Washington Heights, so I get to run in my 'hood
2- Short, fast, best time yet
3- The Kids Race!

So my niece & nephew are always asking to see my medals and I told them they can get their own at a kids race. So they've been very excited about this race for a good 3 weeks now. First was my race. Ran from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital to Fort Tryon Park and back. Distance was 3.1 miles, so that was nothing compared to some of my other runs. It was not entirely easy. Anyone who's been on Fort Washington Ave knows about the many hills, especially the big one on 181st.

So anyway after that was done...it was time for the kids race. For my niece & nephew (4 &5 year olds) the distance was about half a block. As soon as they said go, all the kids were off. My nephew was off and pretty much left all the 4 & 5 year olds behind! So not only did I have a good race but my nephew came in first place! My mom kept saying he shouldve gotten something, but its a kid's race and they all get a medal regardless of how they did. Im still proud of them both though. The first thing they said when we got home was when's the next kids race...looks like I got myself into trouble LOL!

Miles Ran: 3.1 Miles
Feeling Afterwards: I'm amped.
Results: 0:36:18 (11:42 per mile MY BEST PACING YET!)

Races Needed To Qualify For NYC Marathon 2008: 6

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://seeciscorun.blogspot.com/2007/03/coogans-salsa-blues-shamrocks-5k-kids.html' title='Coogan's Salsa, Blues & Shamrocks (5K)... GREAT!!! This is exactly what happened about a year ago when I ran the Brooklyn 1/2 Marathon and got injured trying to catch up to everyone. So I wasn't going to repeat that mistake. No matter what I was not going to try to catch up to the crowd. It's 19 Degrees (F) outside so of course I'm bundled up with like 5 layers. Trying to get undressed as I walk (not run) over to the start line. I'm down to my flightsuit (I hate the cold I try to stay warm), and figured I might as well run in my flight suit...so I'm running with 3 layers. And I'm off....5 minutes after everyone else LOL!!

I was the only one starting 5 minutes after so I wasn't running alone. Also I did manage to catch up to some people...and without forcing it. So my goal was to finish in under 3 hours. Given the situation I didnt think it would happen. I got hot while I was running and couldnt get rid of my suit. I wasnt going to just take it off and throw it to the road. Then there was the weather. The areas near the water stops were covered in ice from the water people dropped. Plus we werent getting cups of water it was ice since it was frozen! The gatorade in my backpack froze so that wasnt working...it just wasnt going good for me.

I managed to make it though...even beat the 3 hour mark I set for myself :)

Miles Ran: 13.1 Miles
Feeling Afterwards: Extremely tired, sore but I was glad I finished within my goal
Results: 2:54:52 (13:20 Pace)
Races Needed To Qualify For NYC Marathon 2008: 7

PF Chang Rock & Roll Marathon (26.2M)

WOW...what a day.

So I messed up big time last night. I broke one of our coach's rules. NEVER have pasta with creamy sauce the night before. SO without thinking...I ordered Chicken Alfredo. MAN...DID I PAY FOR THIS ONE!!!

So I spent the ENTIRE night up because of my stomach ache. Every 20 minuted I was getting up and heading to the bathroom. Half the time I'm thinking I'm going to puke and nothing. So the first thing I'm thinking is there's NO WAY I'm going to do a full marathon a couple of hours from now. Maybe I can switch to the half once I'm there. My alarm goes off and guess what...I still haven't slept...I'm still sick in the bathroom. At this point I'm like forget the marathon I'm too sick to do this.

Then I noticed the messages my coaches and our honored teammates sent us. I grab them and start reading them. The coaches are telling me how proud they are that I'm running. I had some troubles during the season and pretty much didn't train with the team. They were shocked to see me the week before leaving when I showed up to the final group meeting. The Campaign Coordinators and my team mentor are thanking me for sharing my reasons for fundraising with everyone. Lastly I had the letter from our honored teammates thanking us and letting us know the difference we are making in their lives. So after thinking about all this...plus thinking about everyone who helped me fundraise, plus my grandma, plus everyone who was expecting me to come home with a story about my marathon run. I couldn't let all these people down. So I went to the bathroom puked out whatever was in my stomach, cleaned up. Turned on some music to pump me up...got dressed, ate a bagel and walked out the door to my marathon.

Of course my stomach was not 100% so I ended up walking pretty much most of the marathon. I ran when I could but I walked most of it since I was afraid my stomach would act up. So I did not meet my time goal...but I didnt do too bad for someone with an upset stomach walking 26.2 miles. After it was over my body & feet hurt so much I forgot my stomach was messed up LOL.

Miles Ran (and walked LOL): 26.2 Miles
Feeling Afterwards: I'm so sore and so tired I slept through both after parties...but hey my stomach pain is gone!
Results: 6:42:46 (15:22 per mile)
Next Goal: Nashville & San Diego...they're 5 weeks apart!

Mile 11!

Finish Line

The pain kicks in!!
